Meta has started rolling out a new AI-based feature for Reels on Instagram and Facebook that automatically translates, dubs, and lip-syncs videos. This feature will allow users to view Reels created in any language in their preferred language. It was demoed in August and is now available in English, Spanish, Hindi, and Portuguese. The company says this will help creators expand the reach of their content to a global audience.
This new Meta feature is currently integrated into Reels' existing interface and doesn't require any additional apps or tools. According to the company , the service is completely free, and more languages will be added in the future.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri, while demoing the feature in a video, said, "Language barriers shouldn't stop connections between users." He used Meta AI to translate and dub his video into Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese, making it appear as if he was speaking in different languages.

Furthermore, when the lip-sync option is turned on, the AI also syncs the translated audio with the speaking movements, making the video appear even more realistic.
Such videos on Reels will display a tag "Translated with Meta AI" to alert viewers that they are dubs created using AI. Users can also disable the translated audio and watch the original video. Simply go to the three-dot menu and select "Don't translate" under "Audio and Language Settings."
Meta stated that this feature is currently available to creators with more than 1,000 followers and public accounts. The company says that Meta has added more transparency to its AI dubbing system than YouTube, so users can clearly see which content was created by AI.
