No need to enter your UPI PIN anymore! Fingerprint and face unlock are the ways to make payments. Learn the steps.

The biggest advantage of the new system is that people no longer have to bother remembering a PIN. Fingerprint or face authentication will make your transactions as easy as unlocking your phone.

Highlights
  • Scan the QR code or enter your UPI ID while making the payment, then enter the amount
  • Where you were asked to enter your PIN, now select “Use Biometric”
  • Simply authenticate with your phone's fingerprint scanner or face unlock

NPCI and RBI have teamed up to take digital payments to a new level. Now, the hassle of entering a PIN every time for UPI transactions is about to end. Instead, users will be able to make payments using their smartphone's fingerprint scanner or face unlock. This feature will be especially beneficial for those who struggle with repeatedly typing in a PIN or are new to mobile payments.

According to NPCI, this feature will be optional, meaning users can still use the old PIN system if they wish. However, making payments using biometric authentication will make the entire process faster and easier. Let's explore the complete process.

This is how biometric payment will be done
Now that your UPI app supports this feature, all you need to do is;
Scan the QR code or enter the UPI ID while making the payment, then enter the amount.
Where earlier you were asked to enter PIN, now you will get the option of “Use Biometric” or “Pay through Biometric”.
Simply authenticate with your phone's fingerprint scanner or face unlock and the payment will be confirmed.
Within a few seconds, the payment process will be completed and a transaction success message will appear on the screen.
Initially, this feature will only be active for payments up to ₹5,000. For amounts above this, a PIN will be required for security reasons.

What are its benefits?
The tension of forgetting your PIN is over.
The biggest advantage of the new system is that people no longer have to bother remembering a PIN. Fingerprint or face authentication will make your transactions as easy as unlocking your phone. Furthermore, security levels will increase, as while a PIN can be stolen, a fingerprint or face cannot be copied.

Relief from the hassle of transaction failure
It's often seen that people enter the wrong PIN, resulting in failed transactions. The new biometric system will eliminate this problem. Furthermore, the speedy payment process will save time in shops, malls, and other crowded places.

Focus on security and privacy
NPCI clarified that every biometric transaction will be verified according to bank and UIDAI guidelines. If a user does not use this feature for 90 days, their consent will be sought again.
