India may sell BrahMos anti-ship missiles to Indonesia

Defense-related exports from the country have grown rapidly in recent years. In this context, BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, developed with Russian assistance, may be sold to Indonesia. This deal could be worth approximately $450 million. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is the special guest at the Republic Day celebrations. 


This BrahMos cruise missile deal could be announced soon. Sources familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that a major obstacle to this deal is arranging funding for it within Indonesia's budget. These missiles have a firing range of approximately 380 kilometers. If this deal is finalized, Indonesia would be the second country, after the Philippines, to purchase anti-ship cruise missiles. Countries in South Asia are strengthening their military power. The South China Sea is a major point of contention, primarily due to China's desire to assert its dominance. 


India and Indonesia have been negotiating for the sale of the BrahMos cruise missile for almost a decade. This missile was jointly developed by India and Russia. Russia's state-owned military hardware supplier, Rosoboronexport, is also involved in the negotiations for this deal. The Defense Ministry and the Ministry of External Affairs declined to comment on the missile deal. Indonesia's Defense Ministry did not comment. 

Recently, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh stated that defense-related exports have increased from approximately ₹2,000 crore to ₹21,000 crore over the past decade. Singh stated that the target is to increase defense-related exports to approximately ₹50,000 crore by 2029. He stated that army training centers are playing a vital role in preparing soldiers for future challenges. Singh noted that there have been major changes in warfare methods, including information, artificial intelligence, electromagnetic, and cyber attacks. He stated that the army needs to be equipped with both improved training and equipment to counter such attacks.
