Communicating can become increasingly difficult after social media is banned.

Nepal has banned several social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and YouTube from September 4. These platforms were unable to register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, so the government banned them. The ministry had given 7 days from August 28 for companies to complete the registration, but by the time the deadline ended on Wednesday night, no platform including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, X, Reddit and LinkedIn had submitted the application. Now users in Nepal are unable to use Facebook, WhatsApp and other social media apps.

These social media sites were not affected

Even after the Nepal government banned social media, there are some platforms that are working comfortably. TikTok, Viber, Vitak, Nimbuzz and Popo Live were already listed as registered. While platforms like Telegram and Global Diary are still in the approval process. At the same time, many platforms including Meta's Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Alphabet's YouTube, microblogging site X, Reddit and professional site LinkedIn have been a part of this ban.

Will be activated immediately upon completion of registration

The ministry had directed the Nepal Telecommunication Authority to shut down platforms that have not completed registration from Thursday. However, the government has said that any platform that completes the registration will be made operational the same day.

Millions of people will be affected

After the government bans social media in this way, communication can become very difficult, especially Nepalis living abroad are no longer able to communicate with their country through these mediums. Millions of Nepalis live in other countries apart from Nepal for studies or employment, so this ban will directly affect their communication with their families and friends. Facebook also recently started its monetization program in Nepal. This move will greatly affect creators who earn through videos, reels and stories.
