Vincent Biruta, Rwandan foreign minister said the country is happy to welcome asylum seekers and migrants and offer them legal avenues to live.  This multi-million dollar agreement with London is part of new government measures aimed at combating illegal immigration.  For months, the UK has reportedly been negotiating plans to open treatment centers in third countries.  Rwanda and Ghana were reportedly considered, however Ghana denied involvement in January.  According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, such projects would go against the Geneva Convention on Refugees.  The UK has recently seen an increase in the number of people trying to cross the English Channel at the risk of their lives.  In 2021, 28,500 people crossed this stretch of water between the UK and France.  In 2020, that number was just 1,843.
