The hidden power of ocean waves can now be used to generate electricity. This unique device from China generates electricity from the movement of waves. How does this technology work and how much electricity can it generate?

You've likely heard of solar panels and wind turbines for generating electricity. But now efforts are underway to generate electricity from ocean waves. A special device called a Wave Energy Converter (WEC) has been developed for this purpose. This device converts the movement of ocean waves into electricity. This technology is being developed in China.

Know how electricity is generated from sea waves?
Simply put, ocean waves, when they move up and down, contain a lot of energy. A WEC captures this energy. Parts of the device move with the waves, and this movement is transmitted to a generator, using a mechanical or hydraulic system. Some devices use waves to spin a turbine. Others use a body that moves up and down or back and forth with the waves. WECs vary in design, but their purpose remains the same: converting ocean wave energy into electricity. 

China builds large wave energy converter
A significant amount of work has been done on WECs in China, including a large device called Nancun, which reportedly weighs approximately 6,000 tons and has the capacity to generate up to 24,000 kWh of electricity per day, equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of approximately 3,500 homes. This is why wave energy has once again gained traction. Until now, the focus has been on solar and wind energy, but ocean waves also contain significant energy.

How is it different from solar and wind?
Solar panels require sunlight to generate electricity, while wind turbines rely on wind. WECs harness the movement of ocean waves. Ocean water is heavier than air, so waves can contain a lot of energy. However, this doesn't mean that wave energy can be easily converted into electricity. This requires the right location, the right design, and a robust system. 

Wave energy converter technology developed in China is constantly being advanced. If this technology is successful on a large scale, the ocean could become a major source of clean energy in the future. This means that if successful, electricity will be generated not only from the sun and wind, but also from ocean waves.
