Apple's brand new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have launched, and Gadgets 360 is headed to Apple Park in Cupertino to bring you a first look at these devices. With the launch of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, all the rumors and speculation have finally come to an end. It's also interesting because the devices I have in my possession aren't what I was expecting—or maybe that's a big shock. There's plenty to talk about beyond the new Dynamic Island front camera design. If you've always wanted the latest and greatest iPhone or been waiting for an upgrade, keep reading.
iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max price in India
As a result of the strengthening US dollar, Apple's new Pro phones are much more expensive in India than their predecessors. However, there hasn't been much difference in their prices in the US. The price of the iPhone 14 Pro starts at ₹1,29,900 for the 128GB variant. The 256GB iPhone 14 Pro costs ₹1,39,900. The 512GB variant costs ₹1,59,900, and the 1TB variant costs ₹1,79,900. Moving to the larger model, the iPhone 14 Pro Max , its price is ₹10,000 more at each level. Thus, the 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB variants of the iPhone 14 Pro Max are priced at ₹1,39,900, ₹1,49,900, ₹1,69,900, and ₹1,89,900, respectively. It's still unclear why the price difference between the iPhone and iPhone Pro is so much higher in India than in other markets. Apple should use the same price multiplier for its products, but it doesn't.
The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are officially discontinued, but they should be available at discounted prices through third-party retailers for a while.
iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max “Dynamic Island”
So, the rumors surrounding the Apple iPhone 14 series have proven to be true. But what was revealed was only a small part of the story. This is a reminder that we shouldn't jump to conclusions based solely on leaks. Furthermore, it's also a glimpse of how technology can surprise us. I think Apple is thrilled to discover how it can surprise people. And as a spokesperson stated, it's Apple's special dedication to designing hardware and software that makes this possible.
Numerous leaks and renders over the past few months made it clear that Apple was now switching to a pill-hole camera design. While it seemed quite unusual, it wasn't hard to imagine that Apple was simply trying something different. This is the same company that gave us the idea of the notch, tried unsuccessfully to introduce the Touch Bar, and even once convinced itself that a buttonless and screenless iPod was a good idea.
The latest leaks before the phone's release were largely pointing in the right direction. The cutout at the top of the front has a space between the pill and the hole. However, this isn't visible to users because the hole has been expanded by software, leaving you with a black patch. It's integrated into the user interface, providing notifications and status indicators, and is also interactive. Apple has incorporated various animations and transitions into the feature, making this seemingly awkward patch quite useful.
I was pleased that full-screen videos wouldn't play around the two holes. I would have been bothered by even one hole. I'm excited to see how Apple uses its hardware and software prowess to make this a useful UI element. The active display area expands into a pop-up notification popup when needed, otherwise it simply displays things like small album artwork when music is playing, charging, or a payment indicator. Apps can use this area to display ongoing activities. You can view two activities at a time – the second appears in a small circular bubble to the right of the island. Here, I agree with Apple, which appears to be the actual pill-and-hole arrangement reported by leakers.
Overall, this is undoubtedly a significant improvement over the notch, and makes the premium iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feel fresh. It's a distraction when watching full-screen videos, but we'll have to get used to it. In short, the camera seems to be obstructing the display area. No part of the island is a dead zone for touch, meaning the island doesn't interfere with swiping, and touch works regardless of where your finger is within the island.
iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max design
This year, Apple has used a deep purple as its signature color, which is quite intense. The color is quite dark and desaturated, giving it a slightly grayish tinge. Other options include space black, silver, and gold. The frames of both smartphones are made of polished stainless steel. The iPhone 14 Pro weighs 206 grams, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max is much heavier, weighing in at 240 grams.
The shape and proportions of the phones haven't changed much since the iPhone 12 Pro series. The phones have a flat back and a surround frame—the MagSafe accessory ecosystem constrains Apple somewhat here. The rear camera module has become slightly larger, so back covers from last year's phones won't work here. If you're in the US, you'll notice the phone lacks a SIM tray—this is a goal Apple is working towards, but it has its own set of drawbacks, and India has been kept away for now.
There's a Lightning port at the bottom. Rumors suggest that Apple will switch to USB Type-C starting next year. This will become a legal requirement in many countries, but it's still important to have it.
iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max display and specifications
Dynamic Island is exclusively available for Pro handsets, allowing the company to leverage pricing for its display technology. The Super Retina XDR display is now slightly larger and features thinner borders. Apple claims a peak brightness of 1600 nits for HDR, and these panels are rated to deliver up to 2000 nits of brightness outdoors. The refresh rate can drop to 1Hz to save power. For
the first time, Always On Display is included on iPhones, a significant change. It's designed in Apple's own style and features a distinctive visual style. Instead of displaying simple graphics or plain text on a black background like on Android phones, it simply serves as your iPhone's lock screen, albeit in a much dimmed form. Machine learning reduces brightness based on the wallpaper image, but retains details. Lockscreen widgets also remain visible.
Apple claims 29 hours of battery life with the iPhone 14 Pro Max and 23 hours with the iPhone 14 Pro. The improvements include the new A16 Bionic SoC, which boasts 16 billion transistors and is built using a 4nm manufacturing process. The company claims industry-leading power and efficiency with six CPU cores, five GPU cores, 16 Neural Engine cores, and several other subsystems.
iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max cameras
Improvements have also been made in the camera department. The primary camera is 48 megapixels and, for the first time, quad pixel binning is used. Apple claims that the sensor in the new iPhone is 65 percent larger than that of the iPhone 13 Pro. The camera has been optimized for light capture in most cases, with four pixels combined to create a 12-megapixel photo. Low-light quality is also said to be 2 times better. Subjects will remain in sharp focus even in blurred motion backgrounds. Additionally, you can optimize individual pixels, providing more creative options for shooting and editing. The company has also introduced a new 2X zoom option that can crop a 48-megapixel image into a 12-megapixel high-detail image. The phone can also capture 48-megapixel ProRAW photos. The video feature features a new option called Action Mode, which crops the video to give it the stability it feels like it was shot with a gimbal.
The phone features a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera with more focus pixels for macro photos and better low-light shots. The front camera features autofocus for the first time and uses an f/1.9 aperture for better low-light shots. The 9-LED rear flash is adaptive, with intelligent patterns and intensity adjustment. We'll see how these work during our review.
Other new features include crash detection and satellite-based emergency messaging (currently available only in the US and Canada). The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max run iOS 16, which offers some new capabilities. The
new Pro phones look fresh enough to entice people to upgrade. This time, the price difference between these and their non-Pro versions is the largest ever. However, their high prices will likely keep them out of reach for many buyers. To decide whether you should upgrade, be sure to check out Gadgets 360's full review, coming soon.
