8th Pay Commission: There is much speculation surrounding the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission. Following the 8th Pay Commission, government employees' salaries will increase. However, the exact amount of increase has not yet been officially disclosed. Therefore, estimates can be made based on reports. The 8th Pay Commission will be formed to make changes to the salaries, allowances, and pensions of central government employees.


Posts like peon fall in Level-1 in the pay matrix of the Central Government. At present, official confirmation regarding the formation of the 8th Pay Commission and its recommendations is awaited, but based on the reports and demands of employee organizations, a possible increase in the salary of peon can be estimated.

Current Basic Salary (as per 7th Pay Commission)

Under the 7th Pay Commission, the minimum basic salary for a Level 1 employee (peon, sweeper, etc.) is ₹18,000 per month. Adding additional allowances (DA), house rent allowance (HRA), travel allowance (TA), and other allowances, the average salary ranges from approximately ₹24,000 to ₹28,000 per month. However, this also depends on the city. 


Basis for possible hike in 8th Pay Commission

The main basis for salary increases by the Pay Commission is the Fitment Factor. This was 2.57 in the 7th Pay Commission, which increased the minimum basic salary from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000.

Two possible fitment factors are emerging for the 8th Pay Commission


The employee union (NC-JCM) has demanded a fitment factor of 2.86 or higher. Some reports estimate the fitment factor to be between 2.28 and 2.46. If implemented, this fitment factor could increase the salary from 18,000 to 51,480, which is quite impressive. However, confirmation regarding this fitment factor will be expected soon.
