Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a state-owned telecom service provider, will soon launch its 5G service. The company has completed trials for this service. This will help BSNL compete with private telecom companies Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, which already have 5G networks in place across large parts of the country.
A media report quoted a senior BSNL official as saying that the company has completed testing for 5G network. The company's 4G network can be upgraded and trials are being conducted for this. The company's 5G service will be launched soon. Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated approximately one lakh 4G towers of BSNL . The company has used indigenous technology for its 4G network. The design of the company's 4G network is cloud-based and it can be upgraded to 5G network.
Earlier this month, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that the company's 4G towers would be upgraded to 5G in the next six to eight months. He said that India had entered the 4G technology club. Previously, this technology was dominated by five companies from four countries – Sweden, South Korea, China, and Finland. BSNL's 5G service will be called Q-5G, with the Q standing for Quantum. The company has also introduced anti-smishing and anti-spam protection to protect users from SMS messages containing fake links.
Recently, BSNL started the service of delivering SIM cards at the doorstep of customers. An online portal has been launched for this. Through this portal, customers will get the SIM card at their home. It will have the option of prepaid and postpaid SIM. Before this, customers will have to do self-KYC (Know Your Customer) verification. This year, BSNL will get additional funds of Rs 6,982 crore from the central government. Before this, the company has already received funds of about Rs 3.22 lakh crore from the government. This also includes 4G and 5G spectrum worth Rs 89,000 allotted two years ago. The company has also been directed to increase revenue from the mobile segment.
