It has more than 120 sports modes.
Amazfit has launched its latest budget smartwatch, the Amazfit BIP 5 Unity , in India. The new smartwatch will compete with existing players like the OnePlus Nord Watch and Honor Choice Watch. The new watch comes as a lighter version of the existing BIP 5, but with some minor design changes. The new BIP 5 Unity has been slimmed down compared to the Amazfit BIP 5 , and the frame has been changed from plastic to metal. However, some features have been cut down to be more affordable. Rivals to the latest Amazfit smartwatch offer similar features but are available at a lower price point than the BIP 5 Unity. It remains to be seen where the latest smartwatch model stands against the competition. The BIP 5 Unity launched in India for ₹6,999 and is available in three different color options: gray, charcoal, and pink. I got a chance to spend some time with the BIP 5 Unity and here I am going to tell you my initial impressions about this smartwatch.
First impression: A stylish and slim design
The Amazfit Bip 5 Unity commands attention with its slim and elegant design. The first thing I noticed when I held it was its light weight. Weighing 28 grams without the strap, the dial felt feather-light. Even the silicone strap was comparatively light. The light weight might suggest a plastic build, but its middle frame is crafted from stainless steel, which impressed me. At 10mm thick, it's also significantly thinner than other models in the competition. For comparison, the more expensive Bip 5 measures 11.2mm thick and has a plastic bottom frame. The smartwatch certainly feels sturdy and should handle everyday wear and tear without any issues.
The BIP 5 Unity comes with an anti-bacterial liquid silicone strap that's flexible and soft. It features quick-release support, making it easy to remove or reattach to the watch. Overall, I found the BIP 5 Unity to have a sturdy build and stylish design, and it was comfortable to wear.
Display and software
The Amazfit Bip 5 Unity features a vibrant 1.91-inch TFT display. However, if it had an AMOLED display like the more affordable OnePlus Nord Watch, it could have earned the all-rounder title. However, in my brief use, I found the Bip 5 Unity's display quality to be good. Colors were vivid, and fine details were easily readable outdoors. Even in bright sunlight, the display displayed clear information, whether I was checking my heart rate, taking a light walk, or reading notifications while walking.
It comes with Zepp OS 3.0, a fitness-focused software. The smartwatch comes with over 100 watch faces to make it fashionable and give it a new look every day. Many of these watchfaces also display all the important fitness-related details on the dial. From classic analog designs to modern digital interfaces, there's a watch face to suit everyone's tastes.
Amazfit has kept the chipset details under wraps, but I found the UI quite smooth. Navigating between tabs and swiping in all directions was fast, without any lag. App loading times were also relatively low. There's a single button on the right side of the frame, which can be used to open the apps page, activate the Alexa voice assistant, or turn it off/restart. Swiping right or left on the home screen will bring up widgets, select workout shortcuts, and heart rate data. A down swipe from the top will take you to quick toggles, while an up swipe from the bottom will show you notifications.
120+ sports modes
The Amazfit Bip 5 Unity has a lot to offer when it comes to fitness. It offers over 120 sports modes, which is more than most rival models. It claims to automatically detect and track six workouts, including walking, running, treadmill, elliptical, and rowing. I wore it and walked indoors, and found that it automatically detected indoor walking. Along with all these workouts, the BIP 5 Unity's 5 ATM water resistance makes it suitable for swimming. It claims to store all workout data in an organized manner, allowing you to track detailed insights like heart rate, calorie burn, and recovery time through the Zepp app on your mobile phone. The BIP 5 Unity also supports Bluetooth 5.2 for connecting to your mobile phone and making calls.
Health Tracking Features
Amazfit Bip 5 Unity can not only track fitness but also health, for which it has heart rate sensor, blood oxygen saturation sensor (SpO2), sleep monitoring and many other health tracking features. In my initial usage, I compared its heart rate tracking data a couple of times with the data of two premium models of Apple and Samsung, the results were almost similar. This smartwatch also claims stress monitoring. The company says that by wearing BIP 5 Unity on the wrist while sleeping, it records factors like sleep quality, daytime naps, light or deep sleeping pattern and sleep breathing quality. Women can also track their menstrual cycle with this smartwatch.
Battery, Connectivity and Other Features
Amazfit claims that the Bip 5 Unity can last up to 11 days with normal use. This makes it ideal for those who forget or are lazy to charge their devices regularly. The Bip 5 Unity also has a battery saver mode that claims to extend battery life by up to 26 days. This mode prioritizes basic functionality like timekeeping and disables battery-draining features. However, it's important to note that battery life may vary depending on usage habits. Constantly pairing with a phone also impacts battery life. I didn't get much time with it, so I can't make any claims about its exact battery life.
The Amazfit Bip 5 Unity pairs with a smartphone using the Zepp app. The pairing process was fast and easy. Once paired, the smartwatch can view mobile notifications and control music. You can also locate your paired smartphone using the watch. The company claims that Zepp OS gives you access to over 70 downloadable apps and games. It also displays weather updates and allows you to set alarms.
My initial opinion
The Amazfit Bip 5 Unity enters the competitive Indian smartwatch market, where its bigger sibling, the Bip 5, already exists. Priced at ₹6,999, it's about ₹1,000 more expensive than the Bip 5 and more expensive than its main rivals, the OnePlus Nord Watch and Honor Choice Watch . While I missed the AMOLED display, its slim design with a stainless steel frame impressed me at first glance. It boasts a plethora of sports modes and health tracking features, along with key features like Bluetooth calling. The company's claimed battery life is also impressive. However, the true performance of any device can only be known after putting it to the test.
