Suicide Prevention Day: Mental problems can affect a person of any age, gender or caste. But, there are some situations that lead to suicidal thoughts. Here we know which people are most at risk of suicide.
Suicide Prevention Day 2025: Suicide is a serious social and mental health problem in today's time. It is not just a personal tragedy of a person, but deeply affects his family, friends and the entire society. When a person kills himself with the intention of harming himself, it is called suicide. On the other hand, when a person tries to commit suicide but does not die, it is considered a suicide attempt. While talking on such a sensitive topic, we should be very careful about which words we are using. Words like committing suicide, successful suicide or failed suicide can have a wrong impact, so they should be avoided. We talked to Dr. Kamna Chhibber about which people are most at risk of suicide. Let's know about those reasons.
Who is at greater risk of suicide? (Who Is At Risk For Suicide)
Suicide can affect a person of any age, gender or race. However, there are certain circumstances that increase this risk. The most common reasons for this are-
Previous suicide attempt - If someone has tried to commit suicide before, he or she is at a higher risk of doing it again.
Mental illness - Diseases like depression, anxiety or bipolar make a person very weak and increase the risk of suicide.
Addiction : Excessive use of alcohol or drugs can force a person to take wrong decisions.
Chronic pain or serious illness - People who are suffering from pain or illness for a long time may feel frustrated with life and consider suicide.
Family history- If someone in the family has a history of mental illness, drug addiction or suicide, then others may also be affected.
Domestic violence and abuse – Experiences such as beatings, taunts, humiliation or sexual abuse leave deep psychological scars.
Presence of weapons in the home - If a gun or any dangerous weapon is easily found in the home, the risk of suicide increases.
Release from prison: People released from prison often experience loneliness and stress, which can increase the risk of suicide.
Impact of others' suicide : Sometimes, after seeing the suicide of a close or famous person, a person gets influenced and takes the same step.
These reasons for suicide tell us that it is not just a personal problem, but can be the result of many circumstances. It is not true that every person who is going through these circumstances will commit suicide. But if a person shows signs of suicide, it is very important to provide him with immediate help and support. Many lives can be saved by paying attention on time.
