Cybercrime cases are increasing rapidly in the country. Cases of fraud by scammers through eSIM are also coming to light. In these, after calling their victims, scammers send a link for eSIM activation on their phone. On clicking this link, the victim's request to convert their physical SIM to eSIM is automatically approved and their messages start reaching the scammers.

The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Center (I4C), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has issued a warning regarding eSIM fraud. I4C has said that in this, scammers first call their victim and then a link for eSIM activation is sent to their phone . On clicking this link, the victim's request to change the physical SIM to eSIM is automatically accepted. After this, the victim's physical SIM is switched off and he does not receive messages on his phone. In this, all the victim's calls and messages including OTP are redirected to the eSIM that is in the reach of the scammers.

After this, the scammers start their fraud and send a request related to bank transaction on which the victim's bank sends OTP to the registered mobile number. Due to this authorization code being available on the eSIM, scammers easily withdraw money from the victim's bank account. In its warning, I4C has also suggested some measures to avoid such fraud. I4C has said that users should be cautious about unknown callers and the links sent to them. Apart from this, they should themselves request to convert their physical SIM to eSIM and do not trust any unknown person for this.

I4C advises that if a person's phone stops receiving network signals, they should immediately inform their respective bank and telecom service provider. Recently, the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) of the Department of Telecom (DoT) also blacklisted about four lakh SIM cards involved in fraudulent financial activities.
