This system can track and neutralize multiple targets simultaneously.

Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, a major incident occurred late last night (May 7-8). According to reports, Pakistan allegedly carried out airstrikes, which were retaliated by Indian defense systems. India's advanced air defense system, the S-400, is being cited as a key player in this incident. Now that the S-400 is being discussed everywhere, let's explore what this system is and why it is considered one of the world's most lethal air defense systems.

What is S-400?

The S-400, also known as the Triumf, is a long-range air defense system developed by Russia . It is specifically designed to intercept enemy aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and even ballistic missiles. India purchased five S-400 squadrons from Russia in 2018 under a deal worth approximately ₹35,000 crore. In India, it is nicknamed the "Sudarshan Chakra."

How does it work?

The S-400 is a multi-layer system that can track and neutralize multiple targets simultaneously. It uses four types of missiles, with ranges ranging from 40km, 100km, 200km, and 400km. The system is capable of simultaneously identifying and destroying targets flying at altitudes ranging from 100 to 40,000 feet.

A key feature is that the S-400 system is mounted on an 8x8 truck, making it extremely easy to move. This means it has no fixed position, making it extremely difficult for the enemy to detect.

This system is known as the SA-21 Growler in NATO. It is capable of operating in temperatures ranging from minus 50 to minus 70 degrees Celsius.

Radar and tracking capability

The S-400's radar system is extremely powerful. It can simultaneously track approximately 300 targets at a range of up to 600 kilometers. Its firing capacity is also impressive – it can launch 72 missiles at a time, capable of deterring a major air attack.

Why is it so much in discussion?

The S-400 is being discussed because its system can detect enemy air strikes well in advance and, if necessary, destroy them mid-air. This is why it is considered a game-changer. Furthermore, this system adds a new dimension to India's air defenses, enhancing the country's defense capabilities.
