Older versions of Chrome are flawed, risk of system hacking and data theft

Google has released the security fix on the stable channel

India's cyber security agency CERT-In has issued a high-severity security alert for Google Chrome users. The agency has warned that serious flaws have been found in several versions of the Chrome browser running on desktop platforms, which can be exploited to carry out remote attacks. Through these vulnerabilities, hackers can not only gain control of the system, but can also cause major problems like data theft and service disruption.

According to the CERT-In advisory (CIVN-2025-0204), versions older than 140.0.7339.80/81 on Windows and macOS and versions older than 140.0.7339.80 on Linux are affected by this issue. Through these flaws, attackers can run arbitrary code on the system and bypass security restrictions.

Security experts say that the root of these vulnerabilities is in Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine. "Use-after-free" bugs and incorrect implementations related to toolbars, extensions and downloads have been found in it. Due to these bugs, any user can be taken to a specially designed webpage and his system can be hacked.

CERT-In's advisory clearly states that "These vulnerabilities exist due to use-after-free in the V8 engine and inappropriate implementation of toolbars, extensions and downloads. A remote attacker can manipulate a user to visit a specially crafted webpage, which could lead to complete compromise of the system."

The impact of such a successful attack can be severe, including data theft, service outages, and major business disruption. This threat is even greater given Chrome's large desktop user base.

CERT-In has appealed to all Chrome users to immediately install the latest update of the browser. Its fix has already been released by Google on the stable channel. More information related to the update is available on the Chrome Release Blog.
