To curb the growing cyber fraud and fake calls in India, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has so far shut down more than 2 crore mobile connections. According to the department's secretary Dr. Neeraj Mittal, new initiatives such as the Sanchar Sathi portal and the Digital Intelligence platform have curbed problems like call spoofing to a great extent, due to which such calls have reduced by 97%. With the help of AI-based systems, lakhs of fake connections and thousands of points of sale have also been eliminated.
Call spoofing is a technique in which scammers hide their real number and show fake caller ID. It is mostly used for financial fraud and cheating. According to ET report , Dr. Mittal said that the Sanchar Sathi portal and other initiatives have achieved great success in making telecom networks secure. Also, DoT has developed a digital intelligence platform where banks and financial institutions can share information related to fraud. This helps in identifying fraudulent numbers and activities in time.
So far, about 78 lakh fake connections and 71,000 points of sale (POS) have been blocked due to DoT's AI-based system . The department says that in the coming time, the number of telecom testing labs will also be increased so that only certified and quality-tested equipment is used.
DoT is working on security measures in collaboration with private companies and sector-specific agencies. The recently launched Financial Fraud Risk Indicator has also proved to be extremely effective in identifying fraudulent mobile numbers.
Dr. Mittal also informed that the department is now working on increasing the capacity of the centralized internet monitoring system. It is used extensively by law enforcement agencies.
