India is moving ahead in its digital age, but cyber criminals are also upgrading at the same pace. Now Artificial Intelligent (AI) tools have become the new method of cyber crime. AI has been used in 8 out of 10 cyber fraud cases in India. According to a report, India alone has suffered a loss of $2.78 billion due to digital fraud. Let's know about it in detail. Many revelations about cyber crime

were made in the joint report 'The State of AI-Powered Cybercrime: Threat & Mitigation Report 2025' by GIREM (Global Initiative for Restructuring Environment and Management) and automotive tech company Tekion. Karnataka Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP) M A Salim presented this report in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

The report states that cyber criminals are using AI tools to send precisely crafted phishing emails to hotel chains and restaurants. These often use AI-generated templates to impersonate big brands. Apart from email text, AI is used to create real-looking dashboards, register fake domains and create interactive phishing pages, which deceive people into thinking that the email is real. AI tools were used in 80 percent of phishing emails in the country, which shows that AI was used in 8 out of every 10 phishing cases.

According to the report, more than 1.91 million complaints of cybercrime were registered in India last year, while in 2023 this figure was more than 1.55 million. At the same time, this is 10 times more than the crime committed in 2019. Most of the financial fraud happened in this. Last year, Indians lost $2.78 billion due to cybercrime, which is about 3 times more than in 2023 and about 10 times more than in 2022.

The report states that in 2024, India is the second most affected country in the world after the US in terms of crypto attacks, where 95 cases were reported. The country has recorded an annual increase of 11% in malware, 22% in ransomware and 59% in IoT attacks. At the same time, crypto attacks have increased by 409% overall. The most important thing is that the most victims of these cyber attacks are the weaker sections of the society such as senior citizens, children and women. In today's time, dealing with cybercrime has become a big issue for the country, as India is estimated to have more than 900 million internet users by 2025.
