Dostoyevsky's greatest work' John Bayley
Dostoyevsky's remarkable novel of condemnation and salvation conjures a realm where the distinctions between purity and depravity, virtue and vice, become indistinct. It narrates the tale of Raskolnikov, a penniless and desperate ex-student, who roams the impoverished areas of St Petersburg and commits a senseless murder devoid of remorse or regret. He perceives himself as transcending traditional moral boundaries. However, as he engages in a perilous game of cat and mouse with a police investigator, Raskolnikov is relentlessly pursued by the escalating voice of his conscience, ultimately feeling the tightening grip of his own guilt around his neck.
Translated with an Introduction and notes by DAVID McDUFF About the authors
Follow authors to receive updates on new releases, along with enhanced recommendations. I was born in 1945 and attended the University of Edinburgh, where I majored in Russian alongside German. After spending time in the Soviet Union, Denmark, Iceland, and the United States, I eventually established my residence in the United Kingdom, where I worked for several years as a co-editor and reviewer for the literary magazine Stand. I later relocated to London, where I commenced my career as a literary translator.
I consider myself primarily a translator rather than an author, although I enjoy writing introductions to translated works - I believe that a translator possesses a unique opportunity to read and comprehend literary works from within, and it is this experience that I aim to convey to readers through my introductory essays.
My translation portfolio is quite varied - but broadly speaking, it encompasses two main categories: classic prose fiction (predominantly Russian) and twentieth-century poetry (mainly Nordic and Russian).
I reside in Kent, England. Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky (/ˌdɒstəˈjɛfski, ˌdʌs-/; Russian: Фёдор Миха́йлович Достое́вский; IPA: [ˈfʲɵdər mʲɪˈxajləvʲɪtɕ dəstɐˈjɛfskʲɪj]; 11 November 1821 – 9 February 1881), occasionally transliterated as Dostoevsky, was a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist, and journalist.
