Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was disqualified last week as a member of the Lok Sabha (MP) from the date (March 23, 2023) of his conviction in a criminal defamation case for his 'Modi surname' remark. Rahul Gandhi was an MP from Wayanad seat of Kerala.  A day earlier, a Surat court on Thursday sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail in a defamation case over his 'Modi surname' remark made in 2019 during an election rally in Karnataka.  Rahul Gandhi remarked at a Lok Sabha election rally in Kolar, Karnataka in April, 2019 that "how can all thieves be surnamed Modi..." Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Surat West Purnesh Modi against Rahul Gandhi filed a criminal defamation suit.
