Persistent burping is a sign of postnasal drip syndrome
Belching may be due to gastroesophageal reflux disease, which occurs due to abnormal backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus.
Burping may lead to nasal discharge
The German Association of Otolaryngologists said that burping from time to time is normal, stressing the need to consult a doctor if belching persists for more than 4 to 6 weeks.
The association explained that persistent burping may indicate a disease such as “post-nasal drip” syndrome, which means the descent of nasal secretions from the back area of the nose to the throat, and this occurs when mucus is produced in excessive quantities by the nasal mucosa. Symptoms also include bad breath and constant sneezing.
Persistent belching may also be due to gastroesophageal reflux disease, which occurs due to abnormal reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus, whose symptoms also include heartburn (heartburn) and hoarseness. In rare cases, persistent burping can signal a tumor in the throat or larynx.
In any case, the patient should consult a doctor to determine the true underlying cause of persistent burping, on which treatment is determined; For example, antibiotics are treated if the underlying cause of the “posterior nasal drip” syndrome, but if the cause is due to gastroesophageal reflux disease, then the treatment is done by drugs that stop the secretion of gastric acid.
Some methods help to treat frequent burping; It is to eat slowly, avoid talking while chewing food so as not to give an opportunity to swallow large amounts of air and thus belching, and to stay away from fatty foods as much as possible - which can cause reflux and belching - and replace them with healthy and light foods. There are also some foods and drinks that increase gas in the abdomen and are recommended to reduce them, such as broccoli, cabbage, legumes and dairy products, as well as reduce soft drinks because they aggravate belching, and it is preferable not to use a straw while drinking.
It is also recommended to walk after eating, which will help facilitate digestion and reduce the occurrence of digestive disorders that cause belching. Health experts believe that if the cause is pathological, some other symptoms will appear with belching, such as abdominal pain and nausea, and then you should go to the doctor to take the appropriate treatment.
